Gene Borrello recounted his harrowing experiences at Rikers Island. Borrello described Rikers as a chaotic and violent environment, where survival required constant vigilance and toughness. He recalled being jumped multiple times, having his teeth chipped, and needing to fight regularly to avoid being extorted. Borrello emphasized the racial dynamics and gang culture that dominated the facility. Non-gang members struggled to access basic amenities like phones and commissary items unless they aligned with gangs. Despite the brutality, Borrello managed to earn respect from gang members upon discovering his mob affiliation, which provided him a bit more safety.
