Veteran broadcaster Tavis Smiley reflected on the pressure the African American community placed on Barack and Michelle Obama to endorse Kamala Harris. Smiley observed a significant shift when mass numbers of Black people criticized Obama for not immediately backing Harris after Biden's endorsement. Although Obama eventually supported Harris, Smiley emphasized he didn't believe the Black community's love for the former president waned; rather, they were holding him accountable.
Smiley also spoke about the backlash he faced for questioning President Obama during his tenure. Reflecting on past controversies, Smiley noted the irony of how those same communities now understood the importance of holding leaders accountable, something he experienced firsthand 16 years ago. Despite approaching his 60th birthday, Smiley remains committed to truth and accountability while highlighting growth within the community in embracing tough truths.
