Hector Bravo recently delved into the complexities of housing transgender inmates in prisons. Bravo, a former prison lieutenant, argued against placing transgender women in female prisons. He highlighted the challenge where transgender individuals could potentially disrupt the prison environment due to male inmates’ prolonged lack of female presence. Typically, trans inmates are placed in protective custody rather than general population. Bravo described protective custody environments as resembling a “girls club” where inmates form intimate relationships, sometimes akin to romance outside prison. He cited concerning instances, such as biological males in female prisons committing assaults on female inmates. Bravo vehemently opposed such placements, raising awareness with women's advocacy groups to garner media attention on these issues. Additionally, he criticized the use of taxpayer money for gender reassignment surgeries and related procedures in prison.
