Part 3: Erik Prince on Blackwater Grossing $850M, Awarded $400M in Classified Government Work
Part 1: Blackwater Founder Erik Prince on His Dad Becoming a Billionaire

--------

Erik Prince's journey from aspiring military pilot to the founder of Blackwater is an intriguing tale of ambition and innovation. Initially enrolling at the Naval Academy with dreams of becoming a pilot, Prince transferred to Hillsdale College where he learned about the SEALs. Enamored by their rigorous training and mission, he pursued and achieved his goal of becoming a SEAL officer.

His deployment with the SEAL teams exposed him to diverse operations, from combat search and rescue to amphibious reconnaissance, though he noted the lack of direct combat compared to post-2001 military engagements. His experiences highlighted the deficiencies in existing military training facilities and the ineffective performance of U.N. peacekeepers.

Following a family tragedy, Prince left the military and channeled his inherited wealth into establishing Blackwater. He invested $5 million to acquire the initial 3,000 acres (which later expanded) in North Carolina’s Great Dismal Swamp, creating an extensive private training facility for special operations units. Named after the region’s dark waters, Blackwater quickly became a pivotal resource for military training on an unprecedented industrial scale.
