Part 3: Matisyahu on DJ Vlad's Negative Experiences w/ Hasidic Jews, No Oral Sex in Hasidic Culture
Part 1: Matisyahu on Dropping Acid at 16, Going to Wilderness Treatment Program for "Wild Kids"

--------

Matisyahu opened up about his transformative journey into Hasidic Judaism following the events of 9/11. Faced with personal introspection, Matisyahu yearned for a deeper connection with his faith, initially influenced by an encounter with the vibrant, spiritual melodies of Shlomo Carlebach at an Orthodox synagogue. This path led him to embrace a more devout lifestyle, including interactions with other Hasidic groups and delving into Kabbalah. His commitment evolved into an intensive period of personal change, characterized by strict religious observance—eschewing sex and worldly distractions while dedicating 14-16 hours daily to Torah study. Living in Crown Heights, Matisyahu adopted the Hasidic lifestyle fully, immersing himself in spiritual teachings and reshaping his identity. Though the path was rigorous, it ultimately bestowed a profound and lasting transformation that defined not just his religious beliefs but also his artistic expression, merging his love for reggae with Old Testament teachings.
