Part 1: Michael Spinks on Being on 1976 Olympic Team w/ Sugar Ray Leonard, Winning a Gold Medal
--------
In this clip, Michael Spinks reflects on his journey to becoming the undisputed light heavyweight champion during a deeply challenging period in his life. In 1981, Spinks gained attention in the boxing world after defeating Marvin Johnson and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. These victories paved his way to the title fight against Muhammad Kawi for the undisputed light heavyweight championship. However, Spinks faced a personal tragedy just before this significant bout; his 24-year-old wife, Sandy Massey, tragically passed away in a car crash, leaving him as a single father to their two-year-old daughter. Despite his grief and the emotional challenges of addressing his daughter's heartbreaking questions about her mother, Spinks demonstrated incredible resilience. He fought Kawi, even getting knocked down in the eighth round, but ultimately secured a victory by unanimous decision, cementing his place as the top light heavyweight.
