Part 1: John "Red" Shea on Whitey Bulger's Brother Being One of Massachusetts' Biggest Politicians
--------
John "Red" Shea recounted his harrowing experience facing a 20-to-life sentence under charges equivalent to RICO. Arrested on charges of operating within a continuing criminal enterprise, Shea was thrust into the depths of federal scrutiny. Initially under immense pressure to turn informant against Whitey Bulger, Shea recalled resisting attempts by the federal government to make him "roll," a testament to his ingrained code against ratting.
Throughout his legal ordeal, Shea shuffled through high-profile defense attorneys, including those affiliated with infamous mobsters like John Gotti, before ultimately settling with Richard Egbert, a choice heavily influenced by Bulger himself. Egbert brokered a plea deal, reducing Shea's potential life sentence to about a 12-year sentence, inclusive of time served. Describing his sentiments upon accepting the plea, Shea referred to the deal as favorable compared to his looming life sentence.
