Corey Walker, the only adult defendant in Pop Smoke's murder trial, accepted a plea deal on Wednesday (Feb. 5), as he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion robbery charges. Walker, 24, will serve 29 years in prison for the charges, which Pop Smoke's mother addressed in a statement.
While speaking to Rolling Stone, Audrey Jackson stated that the pain of losing her son will never end, "It’s over for everybody except for me. This never ends for me. And that’s unfair."
Speaking about Walker's deal, Jackson explained, "I appreciate they got justice to the fullest extent of the law. But my life doesn’t change. I still don’t have my son. I have not been holding animosity. I’ve just been getting through this. There’s just nothing to say [at Corey Walker’s sentencing]. Everybody’s life has been ruined."
Three other defendants in the case were charged as juveniles, including a then-15-year-old who admitted to being the triggerman. The juvenile was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, but under California law, the maximum age for juvenile detention is 25 years old. Another teen defendant also settled his case and was sent to a post-conviction juvenile housing facility, while a third defendant admitted to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion robbery at a hearing in April 2023.
