Lou Diamond Phillips candidly reflected on the tumultuous production of the 2000 sci-fi film "Supernova," which, despite its $90 million budget and a talented cast including James Spader and Angela Bassett, grossed only $15 million at the box office. Phillips described the project as a "slow-motion trainwreck," marked by mismanagement and constant script rewrites. Initial director Walter Hill was replaced, leading to daily disruptions as MGM executives reportedly rewrote the movie on-set, delaying production and inflating costs. Phillips noted the film’s potential was compromised, with many key sequences cut to save money. Despite an attempt to salvage the project by legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, the film failed to recoup the considerable resources spent. Phillips remarked on the stark educational experience regarding the wastefulness in film production and highlighted the limited control actors often have over a film's final outcome and marketing strategy.
