Footage of a Delta Air Lines jet flipping on its roof while landing Monday at Toronto’s Pearson Airport has gone viral, as the incident was one of several recent plane crashes. Thankfully, all 80 people on board survived, and those hurt had relatively minor injuries, according to the airport’s chief executive.
Newly surfaced video footage is helping piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the crash, as the rear landing gear of the plane appears to buckle, and the right wing tore away into a fireball as the jet made a hard landing on the runway. The plane then appeared to skid before flipping over onto its roof.
John Nelson, a passenger, spoke to CNN about his experience during the crash, stating, "It was a typical flight from Minneapolis to Toronto. And we were coming in, and I did notice the winds were super gusty. The snow had kinda blown over the runways. So coming it was routine but it was noticeable that the runways were in kind of a weird condition."
He added, "And when we hit, it was super hard...we hit the ground and the plane went sideways and I believe we skidded on our side and flipped over on our back. Where we ended up there was a big fireball on the left side of the plane."
Nelson went on to detail being upside down after the flight, and he added, "Thankfully everybody was okay. We tried to get off as quickly as possible. And shortly thereafter, there was another explosion, but luckily, the firefighters got out of there."
