He highlighted the key role of Mark Furman, the lead detective, who was discredited after taking the Fifth Amendment when questioned about his use of racial slurs and potential evidence tampering. Furman's actions, Tacopina argues, gave Simpson's defense a significant advantage and made it impossible to convict Simpson beyond a reasonable doubt. Although the trial was controversial and viewed as a poor example of the justice system, Tacopina feels the verdict adhered legally. The subsequent civil trial, which found Simpson liable under a lower standard of proof, was seen as fair by Tacopina.
