Cardi B is speaking out following a devastating nightclub collapse in the Dominican Republic that has claimed at least 124 lives and left 155 others injured, according to local officials.
The tragedy occurred during a live performance at the popular venue, where singer Rubby Pérez had been performing at the time of the collapse. While early reports suggested he had survived, authorities confirmed on Wednesday morning (April 9) that his body had been found. He was 69.
Also among the victims were former MLB players Octavio Dotel, 51, and Tony Blanco, 43, as well as Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi, a province in the country’s north.
In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, Cardi B — who is of Dominican descent — expressed her sorrow through her private BG Secret Society group on Instagram Tuesday night.
“I’m in literal tears scrolling down my timeline, seeing my Dominican people being rescued — some with life, and some gone,” she wrote. “I’m sad seeing families crying desperately in pain, looking for loved ones... I feel like every Dominican around the world is in a big Hora Santa, praying for survivors and for the ones that are gone to be in God’s glory.”
She continued, “For the people who lost a family member or friend — don’t hold on to bad memories. They left this earth singing, dancing, and most likely happy, enjoying themselves. That’s how the Lord will receive them.”
Cardi also honored Rubby Pérez’s legacy, calling him “one of our iconic artists,” and adding: “I’m glad, though, that our final memory of him was him sharing his beautiful voice with us. He sang one last time.”
