During a recent episode of the It Is What It Is podcast, Cam’ron and Mase opened up about the unexpected sting of being dissed by the very artists they once idolized.

The conversation started with Cam’ron reacting to Shaquille O’Neal taking shots at NBA star Luka Dončić. That led Mase to recall his own experience with disappointment in the rap game.

“Man, I used to look up to you… Now this n**** is critiquing me, and I’m better than him!” Mase admitted, reflecting on the harsh reality of hearing criticism from rappers he once admired.

Cam’ron then shared a story about Nas dissing his Come Home With Me album during a 2002 appearance on Power 105.1. The Harlem rapper said the diss caught him completely off guard.

“I remember Nas dissing me for no reason, and I’m like, ‘Nas? What did I do to Nas?’” Cam said. “I had to ask myself—am I really about to go to war with Nas? If so, I’m ready.”

Mase added that Prodigy also took shots at Cam’ron around that time, and even though the two weren’t speaking then, Mase admitted he was heated about it.

The conversation wrapped with Cam’ron referencing a fitting lyric from Drake’s Thank Me Later: “And that’s around the time that your idols become your rivals.”
